Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms

16th November 2010

We all should know now that carbon monoxide is tasteless, odourless, and also invisible. So, here is a quick reminder of the carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms you should be looking out for this Christmas!
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Problems with coordination
  • Loss of memory
These are very much like a flu infection - but carbon monoxide poisoning doesn't cause a high temperature. However, if left undetected, then you run the risk of suffering the following highly serious problems;
  • Irregular heart rate
  • Hyperventilation
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness
CO poisoning can lead to DEATH if undetected, so recognising the CO poisoning symptoms is essential knowledge to spot any problems in your friends and family’s homes.

However, remember to check that the batteries are still working in your carbon monoxide alarms in your own home! This is vitally important. Our CO alarms generally feature a very useful ‘Test & reset’ button, which makes testing very simple indeed...so remember to press that button weekly!

As you say the symptoms are similar to flu, and as many people are not aware of this, maybe it goes undetected for a long time or until it's too late. The only real way to be safe is to have carbon monoxide detectors installed.
