Approximately 1 in 3 homes in the Uk have non working smoke alarms. The main reason for this is due to the frustration felt by the user at the number of false alarms experienced, and the difficulty in silencing an alarm fixed high on the ceiling. A recent Home Office report states "since 1995, there has been a 76% increase in the number of fires where the smoke alarm failed to operate. The main reason in each year was missing batteries, which accounted for 42% of failures in 1999. Battery failures account for a further 10%, and 13% of failure were caused by other acts preventing operation".
