Concealed Flue Installations: Technical Bulletin 008
New guidance to protect consumers from carbon monoxide has now been brought into force. Technical Bulletin 008 (TB 008) has been revised following several incidents (including at least one fatality) where defects have been found in room-sealed fanned-draught gas appliance systems installed in voids. This resulted in carbon monoxide from a faulty boiler and/or flue entering the property. An example of a void is the space between the ceiling and the floor above.
TB 008 explains that from 1 January 2011 homeowners and landlords will have two years to ensure that any properties with boiler flues that are concealed behind walls or ceilings have inspection hatches fitted. During this two year period, systems without these inspection hatches can remain in operation only as long as the boiler passes a revised risk assessment which includes having audible
carbon monoxide alarms fitted. These alarms must comply with BS EN 50291:2001.
