Whether you’re a weekend boater or living aboard, fire and carbon monoxide (CO) pose real risks on the water.

In the confined space of a boat, danger can escalate quickly. But with a few precautions, you can relax and enjoy life afloat.

Did you know: Boaters are 30 times more likely to die from CO poisoning than those on land.

Why Boats Are High-Risk Environments

  • Solid fuel stoves, engines, generators, and gas cookers all produce CO
  • Poor ventilation can lead to rapid build-up of gases
  • Small, enclosed spaces make fire spread faster and escape harder

Real Danger: In 2013, two people died on a Norfolk Broads cruiser due to CO poisoning from a poorly ventilated generator.

Marine Safety Essentials

  • Install a marine-certified CO alarm and optical smoke alarm compliant with BS EN 50291-2
  • Ensure regular servicing of gas and fuel-burning appliances by qualified marine engineers
  • Never block ventilation grills or flues
  • Store fuel and gas cylinders safely, away from heat sources

Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) Requirements

  • Since April 2019, CO alarms are mandatory on boats with accommodation if there are solid fuel stoves or engine rooms
  • Failure to comply means a failed BSS certificate, making your boat illegal to operate

Quick Tips for Fire and CO Safety on Boats

  • Test alarms weekly
  • Never run generators or engines while docked without proper exhaust venting
  • Install fire extinguishers and fire blankets in galley areas

Sail safe. Stay alert. Check your alarms.
