How to stay safe and celebrate Bonfire night

Fire Safety

06 November 2024

Bonfire Night is an exciting time of year, filled with fireworks, fun, and family gatherings. Whether you’re celebrating on November 5th or marking other festivals like Diwali, New Year’s Eve, or Chinese New Year, it’s essential to stay safe while enjoying the show.

With around 10 million people in the UK buying fireworks each year, it’s clear that the thrill of fireworks is a beloved tradition. But safety must come first, especially for families. According to the British Pyrotechnics Association, fireworks sales generate an annual turnover of £13.4 million, and yet, around 150 fires in England are caused by fireworks every year. Additionally, there are 850 home fires from candles. Let’s ensure your celebration doesn’t become part of these statistics.

Top 10 firework safety tips for families

For a fun and safe Bonfire night, here are the top safety tips to keep your family out of harm’s way while still enjoying the firework magic and excitement

  • Adults only

Fireworks should always be handled by adults. From setting up the display to lighting fireworks and disposing of them, it’s a job for responsible adults. Keep children at a safe distance and remember—alcohol and fireworks don’t mix!

  • Plan ahead

A successful firework display is a well-planned one. Check local regulations about the times you can legally set off fireworks and plan your evening accordingly to keep it safe and enjoyable.

  • Buy certified fireworks

Only purchase fireworks that carry the UKCA mark (or UKNI for Northern Ireland). This certification ensures they meet strict safety standards. Keep fireworks stored in a closed box and use them one at a time.

  • Read the instructions

Always follow the specific instructions on each firework. Use a torch if necessary to ensure you’re reading them clearly in the dark.

  • Light at arm’s length

Light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper or a long firelighter, and always stand well back after lighting to avoid any potential dangers.

  • Avoid naked flames

Keep all naked flames—including cigarettes—far away from fireworks. One careless flame can easily ignite a firework at the wrong moment.

  • Never return to a lit firework

If a firework doesn’t go off, never return to it. It could still ignite, and approaching it could result in serious injury.

  • No pockets or throwing

Fireworks should never be carried in pockets or thrown, as this can cause unintended and dangerous explosions.

  • Direct rockets safely

Ensure that all rocket-style fireworks are directed away from spectators and any flammable materials to avoid accidental injuries or fires.

  • Bonfire safety

If you’re lighting a bonfire, avoid using flammable liquids like petrol or paraffin. Always ensure the fire is completely out before leaving and check the surrounding area for any remaining embers.
