The Queen of Clean’s top tips for keeping your Fire & CO alarms in tip-top shape

Fire Safety

30 May 2025

Hi guys! It’s your Queen of Clean here with a royal reminder that fire and carbon monoxide alarms deserve just as much love as your loo or your light switches.

Yep, those unassuming little alarms on your ceilings? They’re absolute lifesavers (literally), but only if they’re clean, well maintained, and in full working order. With stats showing 1 in 4 homes don’t have working smoke alarms and 1 in 3 don’t have carbon monoxide protection, it’s high time we gave these tiny heroes a bit of TLC.

So here are my top tips to help keep your alarms sparkling clean and working beautifully, because safety should always be part of your cleaning routine!

👑 1. Dust Off That Crown Gently!

Smoke and heat alarms might be small, but dust and kitchen grease can build up and stop them from working properly. Not what we want!

  • For smoke alarms: Gently remove the alarm from the ceiling (check your manual if you’re unsure), and vacuum the vents with a soft brush attachment. Don’t go full power,  we’re not hoovering the stairs!
  • For heat alarms (usually in the kitchen): Use a microfibre cloth to wipe away grease or dust. Be careful not to spray anything directly on the unit.

 2. While You’re Up There… Check That Date!

Most alarms have a little sticker with their manufacture date. If it’s been nearly 10 years (or more!), it’s time to replace it.

Just like milk, fire alarms have a shelf life, but instead of going off in your tea, a faulty alarm could fail in an emergency. We don’t want that! FireAngel’s alarms are designed to last up to 10 years and even give you end-of-life alerts, but a quick check now could save lives later.

🔥 3. Heat Alarms for the Win

Did you know heat alarms are less prone to false alarms from cooking or burnt toast? They’re ideal for kitchens where traditional smoke alarms can be a bit overdramatic (we’ve all been there!).

If you haven’t already, consider popping one of FireAngel’s fab heat alarms in your kitchen for more accurate protection and fewer beeps while you cook your famous roasties.

🧯 4. Clear Your Escape Routes

While you’re in home maintenance mode, do a quick sweep (pun fully intended!) of your hallways and stairwells. Keep them free of clutter so everyone can get out quickly in an emergency.  Shoes, baskets, coats, it all adds up. If there was ever a reason to tidy that hallway, this is it!

💨 5. CO Alarms: The Silent Protector

Carbon monoxide is odourless, colourless and tasteless and terrifyingly, it can seep through walls. That’s why every home needs a CO alarm. Not just for gas boilers, but log burnersgas hobs, and even some open fires.

If your home doesn’t have one yet, please make this your sign. FireAngel have a great range simple, stylish, and smart.

👑 Final Thought from Me

A clean home isn’t just about shiny sinks, it’s about safety too. So pop a reminder in your diary to give your alarms a monthly clean, a weekly test, and an annual check-up. Because the real sparkle comes from peace of mind.

Stay safe, stay fabulous, and give those alarms a quick wipe while you’re at it! 💕

Love,

Lynsey x
