Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up. It’s also an opportunity to eliminate hidden fire hazards that could put your home and family at risk.

As you deep clean this season, make sure to include these five crucial safety checks on your to-do list.

1. Dusty smoke & CO alarms

Over time, dust can build up inside your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, reducing their effectiveness. Use a vacuum attachment or a dry cloth to clean them and test that they’re still working properly.

2. Grease build-up in the kitchen

Grease and oil residue on stovetops, range hoods, and oven interiors can become a fire hazard. Give these surfaces a thorough clean and always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

3. Overloaded plugs

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to check your electrical setup. Avoid plugging too many devices into one socket and replace old, frayed cables that could spark a fire.

4. Clutter near heat sources

Piles of magazines, papers, or even blankets too close to heaters, radiators, or fireplaces can ignite quickly. Keep flammable items away from heat sources and make sure furniture isn’t blocking air vents.

5. Expired fire & CO alarms

Smoke and CO alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Check the manufacturing date on your devices and upgrade to interlinked alarms for enhanced protection.

As you refresh your home and protect your loved ones, don’t forget that a safer home starts with a thorough clean-up.
