CO Safety

storm safety in the UK
The UK’s unpredictable weather patterns mean storm warnings can strike at any time, bringing heavy rain, high winds, and even power outages.

As a homeowner, being prepared for storms isn’t just about protecting your property—it’s about safeguarding your family, too. Here’s your ultimate guide to storm-proofing your home and keeping everyone safe.

Protect against Carbon Monoxide (CO) during power outages

Storms can happen suddenly as we’ve seen with Storm Éowyn and Storm Herminia across the UK. Storms often lead to power cuts, and many people turn to fuel-burning appliances like portable generators, stoves, or fireplaces for heat or cooking. However, these appliances can produce carbon monoxide (CO); a deadly gas that’s colourless, odourless, and tasteless.

Why is CO dangerous?

  • Known as the “silent killer,” CO poisoning results in symptoms like nausea, headaches, and drowsiness, which are easily mistaken for the flu.
  • Exposure to high levels of CO can be fatal, with around 40 deaths and 4,000 A&E visits annually in England and Wales due to CO poisoning.

How to stay safe from CO during a storm:

  • Purchase a CO alarm: Place it 1-3 metres away from any fuel-burning appliances and in rooms where your family spends the most time, such as bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Choose certified alarms: Look for CO alarms that meet British Standard EN 50291 and carry the Kitemark for added peace of mind such as our FA3322 Digital display carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Test alarms regularly: Ensure your CO alarm is functioning properly by testing it monthly and replacing batteries as needed.
  • Service appliances annually: Book a GAS SAFE registered engineer to inspect and maintain your fuel-burning appliances.

Candle and power outage safety

Power outages often lead to increased use of candles for light, but they can pose significant fire risks if not used safely. Here’s how to stay safe:

Use candles cautiously:

  • Keep candles away from flammable materials like curtains, furniture, and paper.
  • Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface to prevent tipping.
  • Extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Consider LED alternatives:

  • Battery-powered LED lights and lanterns provide a safer alternative to candles during power outages.

Ensure smoke alarms are working:

  • Smoke alarms are your first line of defence in detecting fires caused by candles or other hazards. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, particularly in hallways and sleeping areas.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly to ensure they’re functioning correctly.
  • Replace the batteries in your smoke alarms regularly, or invest in models with sealed, long-life batteries for added peace of mind.

After the storm: assess and recover safely

Inspect your home: Check for damage to your roof, windows, and outdoor areas. Document any issues for insurance claims.

Avoid floodwaters: These can be contaminated with sewage or other hazards. If flooding has occurred, wear protective gear and ensure proper ventilation when cleaning up.

Check your CO alarms: If you’ve used fuel-burning appliances during the storm, confirm that your CO alarms didn’t detect any danger. Replace them if necessary.
