Do I legally need a carbon monoxide alarm in my home?

It depends on your situation and where you live in the UK:

  • England: CO alarms are required in any room with a fixed combustion appliance (such as gas boilers, gas fires, oil boilers, wood burners, or open fires, but not gas cookers). They are also required under Building Regulations when installing or replacing a combustion appliance in any home.
  • Scotland: CO alarms are required in all homes, regardless of tenure, in every room containing a carbon-fuelled appliance or flue. Regulations introduced in 2022 require sealed, tamper-proof batteries for the full lifespan of the alarm; the FA6829S meets this requirement.
  • Wales: CO alarms are required in rented properties in every room with a gas, oil or solid fuel appliance, including gas cookers.

This supports compliance with carbon monoxide alarm UK law and landlord CO alarm regulations.

Even where not legally required, carbon monoxide detectors are strongly recommended by the UK Health Security Agency, Gas Safe Register and fire services for any home with fuel-burning appliances.
