Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, wood, or coal burn without enough oxygen.

Common causes include:

  • Poorly serviced boiler or gas fires
  • Blocked flues or chimneys
  • Wood burners used in poorly ventilated rooms
  • Faulty or poorly maintained appliances

Carbon monoxide can also travel through walls from adjoining properties.

The best prevention is annual servicing of appliances by a qualified, Gas Safe registered engineer, combined with a working CO alarm.
