Understanding Spec+ Bluetooth™ Low Energy interlinking and connection methods

Compliance

27 August 2026

For social housing providers, landlords and professional installers, choosing the right fire alarm system is about more than simply meeting safety requirements. Installation time, system flexibility and ease of maintenance can all have a significant impact on a project.

FireAngel Spec+ has been designed with these considerations in mind, combining built-in Bluetooth™ Low Energy (BLE) interlinking with flexible hardwired options.

But what exactly is Bluetooth Low Energy, and how does it work within a fire alarm system?

Three circular Spec+ Bluetooth devices interlink, supporting up to 50 units via Low Energy.

What is Bluetooth Low Energy?

Bluetooth™ Low Energy (BLE) is a wireless communication technology designed to provide reliable connectivity while using very little power.

Unlike traditional wired interconnection, BLE allows devices to communicate without the need for interconnecting cables. This can simplify installation and make future changes to a system easier.

For Spec+, BLE is built into every alarm as standard. This means installers do not need to purchase or install additional wireless modules to create a wireless interlinked system.

When alarms are successfully interconnected, if one alarm detects a fire condition, the other interconnected alarms will also sound. This provides a coordinated warning throughout the property.

How does Bluetooth™ interlinking work with Spec+?

Spec+ alarms can be interconnected to create a Bluetooth™ network of up to 50 devices, making the system suitable for a wide range of applications, including homes, HMOs, social housing and other multi-occupancy buildings.

Please note that these Bluetooth™ interlinked alarms are designed to communicate exclusively with compatible products within the FireAngel Spec+ range. They are not intended to communicate with wireless alarms from other FireAngel ranges or from other manufacturers.

Connecting Spec+ alarms: three options

One of the key advantages of Spec+ is its installation flexibility. Alarms can be interconnected in three ways:

1. Bluetooth™ wireless interlink

The built-in BLE technology allows alarms to be interconnected wirelessly, removing the need for dedicated interconnecting cables.

This can help reduce installation time and simplify projects, particularly where installing additional cabling would be difficult or disruptive.

Wireless interlinking also makes future system modifications more straightforward, as alarms do not rely on physical interconnect wiring.

2. Hardwired interlink

Where a wired solution is preferred or required, Spec+ alarms can be interconnected using a dedicated interconnect conductor.

Hardwired interconnection provides an alternative to wireless connectivity and can be incorporated into installations where interconnect cabling is already being used or is appropriate for the building design.

AC-powered alarms will still require a mains supply in accordance with the relevant requirements, including BS 5839-6 and applicable Building Regulations.

3. Mixed hardwired and wireless interlink

Spec+ also provides the flexibility to combine hardwired and Bluetooth wireless interconnection within a system.

This can be particularly useful in larger or more complex properties, where some areas may be better suited to wired connections while others can benefit from wireless connectivity.

The result is a more adaptable approach to system design, allowing installers to select the most appropriate connection method for different parts of a property.

What are the benefits for housing providers?

For social housing providers, landlords and contractors, the benefits of a simpler interlinking system extend beyond installation.

Fewer installation steps can help reduce time spent in individual properties, potentially minimising disruption for residents. The ability to use wireless, hardwired or mixed connections also gives installers greater flexibility across different property layouts.

With support for networks of up to 50 devices, built-in security and over-the-air updates, Spec+ is designed to support both installation and ongoing system management.

A flexible approach to fire alarm interlinking

Bluetooth Low Energy provides a practical alternative to traditional wired interconnection, helping make fire alarm installation more flexible without compromising the need for coordinated alarm operation.

With built-in BLE, app-based setup, hardwired compatibility and mixed connection options, Spec+ gives professional installers and housing providers greater choice in how their fire alarm systems are designed and installed.

For projects where installation efficiency, flexibility and ongoing maintenance matter, understanding the different interlinking options is an important part of choosing the right fire alarm solution.
