FireAngel stands with the NEA on fuel poverty action day 

This crucial initiative sheds light on the devastating impact of fuel poverty and the urgent need for action to ensure everyone can afford a warm and safe home. 

The Reality of Fuel Poverty 

Fuel poverty affects six million households across the UK, according to NEA. With energy prices still 50% higher than pre-crisis levels, many families face difficult choices between heating their homes and other essentials. Cold homes are linked to increased risks of respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, poor mental health, and even unintentional injuries. 

Key facts from NEA: 

• Over £3.7 billion is owed to energy suppliers, leaving many unable to escape this debt without a dedicated Help to Repay scheme. 

• Standing charges must be paid regardless of energy use, disproportionately impacting low-income households. 

• Disabled individuals and carers often face higher energy costs due to increased home energy needs, while lone parents and households with children under five are more likely to experience fuel poverty. 

These challenges are further compounded by the upcoming energy price cap rise in January 2025, which will add even more strain to already struggling households. 

The Risks of Alternative Heating Solutions 

Fuel poverty doesn’t just mean colder homes; it also leads to dangerous behaviours. Many households resort to unsafe heating methods, such as using portable gas stoves, old appliances, or makeshift solutions that significantly increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, and its dangers are heightened in colder months when ventilation is often reduced.
