Optical smoke alarms are recommended for hallways and landings. They catch the slow-burning smoke that comes from sofas, bedding and electrical fires. Heat alarms belong in kitchens, garages and lofts, where temperature spikes signal the fire before smoke does. Carbon monoxide alarms cover boilers, gas fires and the indoor risk from charcoal and gas appliances. Together, they cover the two biggest household risks at once.
