Replacement cycle: When should you upgrade your fire alarms?

CO Safety

13 May 2026

Fire safety at home isn’t something to set and forget. Every smoke alarm, heat alarm, and carbon monoxide alarm has a defined replacement cycle – and understanding when to upgrade could make all the difference in an emergency.

Most smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are designed to last up to 10 years. After this, their sensors can weaken, making them slower to respond or increasing the risk of a faulty fire alarm. Even if everything appears normal, an ageing unit may no longer offer reliable protection.

Smoke and CO alarm with guidance on fire alarm lifecycle and when to replace your alarms.

When should you replace your alarms?

Knowing the timeline is important – but understanding why helps you act sooner and more confidently:

Smoke alarms and heat alarms (every 10 years)

Over time, dust, debris, and general wear affect the sensitivity of a smoke detector or heat alarm. This can lead to missed detections or frequent false alerts. If your smoke alarm is not working properly during testing, or you’re experiencing repeated nuisance alarms, it’s a clear sign to upgrade to a modern replacement alarm.

Carbon monoxide alarms (every 10 years)

A carbon monoxide detector protects against an invisible, odourless gas, so accuracy is critical. As the sensor ages, it may fail to detect low levels of CO. If your CO alarm is older or showing signs like an alarm beeping unexpectedly, it’s time to replace the unit entirely.

Battery powered (bi-annually or as needed):

For alarms with replaceable batteries, changing them twice a year ensures uninterrupted protection. Chirping sounds often indicate low power – but if replacing the battery doesn’t stop the noise, you may be dealing with a fire alarm faulty due to age.

Signs you shouldn’t ignore

Frequent false alarms, visible damage, or an alarm that fails to sound during testing all point to a replacement cycle that’s been reached – or exceeded.
