How often should you test your fire alarms?

Fire Safety

27 January 2026

Testing your fire alarms is quick, simple, and essential for keeping your home and family protected.

Why is it important to test your fire alarms?

Testing your smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarms ensures that all critical components – including the sensor, internal electronics, and sounder – are functioning correctly. An alarm that isn’t working properly may fail to alert you in an emergency, reducing your ability to escape safely. Regular testing helps identify faults early, so you can take action before safety is compromised.

We recommend testing all smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarms once a week. Weekly testing allows you to spot potential issues such as low batteries or fault warnings straight away. Making this a routine habit, perhaps on the same day each week, helps ensure your protection is always active and reliable.

How to test your fire alarms

Smoke and heat alarms can be tested using the same simple method:

  • Locate the large test button on the alarm unit
  • Press and hold the button to activate the test sequence
  • You should hear two loud sequences of three beeps
  • An LED light on the unit will flash to confirm the alarm is operating correctly

If you hear the alarm and see the LED flash, you can be confident that everything inside the alarm is working as intended.

What if your alarm doesn’t sound or keeps beeping?

If your alarm doesn’t sound during testing, or if it starts beeping when it hasn’t been tested, this is a sign that something isn’t right. The battery may be running low, or the alarm could be approaching the end of its working life. Always refer to the user manual for guidance, but be aware that some issues indicate it’s time for a replacement rather than a repair. If issues persist despite checking the user manual, please contact our Customer Support Team.

This is also a good opportunity to review whether your current alarms still meet your needs. Older alarms may not offer the latest features, such as sealed-for-life batteries or interlinked technology, which can provide enhanced protection throughout your home.

Don’t forget to replace your alarms

Over time, sensors naturally degrade and become less responsive. On the base of an alarm is typically a replace by date; once this date is reached, the alarm should be changed to maintain effective protection.

If your alarm has failed a test, reached its replace-by date, or you’re looking to upgrade your home safety, explore our latest range of FireAngel alarms. From smoke and heat alarms to advanced interlinked solutions, you’ll find reliable options designed to protect every type of home.

A simple habit that protects your home

Weekly testing, checking replace-by dates, and upgrading when needed are small actions that make a big difference. By maintaining your alarms and choosing trusted FireAngel products, you’re taking proactive steps to keep your home safer, today and in the future.
