The hidden fire risks of smoking and emollients in the home

Fire Safety

14 April 2026

Smoking is a leading cause of accidental house fires in England – but when combined with emollient creams, the risk can be even greater than many people realise.

While many people are aware of the dangers of unattended cigarettes or smoking in bed, fewer realise that combining smoking with the use of emollient creams can significantly increase the risk of a serious fire.

Why emollients increase fire risk

Emollients are essential for managing chronic dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, and they should continue to be used as prescribed. However, when these creams are absorbed into fabrics like clothing, bedding, or dressings, they can leave behind a residue that builds up over time.

This residue is not flammable on its own, but it can act as an accelerant. If exposed to a flame, such as a lit cigarette, it can cause fabrics to ignite more quickly and burn more intensely.

According to guidance from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), this risk applies to all emollients, including paraffin-free products. You can read more in their official safety advice here.

Who is most at risk?

While anyone using emollients should be aware of the risk, certain groups are more vulnerable:

  • People aged over 40
  • Smokers
  • Those with limited mobility
  • Individuals living alone or receiving care

For these individuals, the combination of reduced mobility and increased fire risk can have devastating consequences.

How to reduce the risk at home

If you or someone in your household smokes, these simple steps can help prevent fires:

  • Use a proper, stable ashtray made from non-combustible material
  • Add water to ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished
  • Never smoke in bed
  • Avoid smoking when tired or under the influence of alcohol or medication
  • Never leave lit cigarettes unattended

For those using emollients, additional precautions are essential:

  • Avoid smoking if clothing or dressings may be contaminated
  • Keep away from open flames, heaters, and cooking hobs
  • Wash clothing and bedding regularly (while noting this won’t remove all residue)
  • Keep creams off furniture where possible
  • Inform carers and family members about the risks

Where protection makes the difference

Even with the best precautions, accidents can still happen. That’s why early detection is so important – especially for those most at risk.

FireAngel’s Pro Connected range is designed to support safer living by working seamlessly alongside your prevention efforts. Rather than acting as a last-minute safeguard, it becomes part of a wider, proactive approach to home safety.

With interconnected alarms, if one device detects smoke or heat, every alarm in the home sounds – helping ensure the warning is heard wherever you are. This can be particularly important in larger homes, at night, or for individuals with reduced mobility.

The added ability to receive mobile alerts means you can stay informed even when you’re not at home. For families supporting elderly relatives or loved ones using emollients, this provides an extra layer of reassurance.
