A sustainable approach to home protection

Fire Safety

23 September 2026

When we think about sustainability, the products we bring into our homes are part of the conversation. How they are made, how long they last and what happens to them at the end of their life can all affect their environmental impact.

At FireAngel, we are looking at how these considerations can be incorporated into the way we design home safety products.

The FireAngel One range has been developed with a number of features intended to reduce material waste and extend product lifespan, while continuing to meet the standards required for life-safety products.

Recycled materials

The plastic outer casing used for FireAngel One alarms* are made with up to 65% recycled plastic. Using recycled material gives plastic that could otherwise have become waste another use within the product.

This is particularly relevant given the scale of global plastic production. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally each year, with an estimated 19–23 million tonnes of plastic waste leaking into rivers, lakes and seas annually.

Packaging designed to reduce waste

Sustainability also extends beyond the alarm itself. FireAngel One packaging is recyclable, with cardboard and paper used where possible, including the box and printed sleeve.

This helps reduce the amount of non-recyclable packaging associated with the product and makes it easier for customers to dispose of packaging responsibly once installation is complete.

Designed to last

Longevity is another important consideration when looking at the environmental impact of a safety product.

FireAngel One smoke and heat alarms use 10-year sealed batteries, designed to last for the lifetime of the alarm. This removes the need for regular battery replacement, meaning fewer battery changes and less battery waste throughout the product’s working life.

The range is also designed with longevity and future development in mind, with every device backed by a 5-year FireAngel warranty. If something goes wrong within the warranty period, simply contact us with your proof of purchase and we’ll take care of the rest.

We’re continuing to explore ways to extend product life and reduce the components and materials required throughout our products’ lifecycles. This includes innovations such as UltraSense™ technology, designed to help protect sensors from becoming damaged, and our combi alarms, which combine two sensors within a single alarm housing.

Less disruption when replacing alarms

Sustainability can also be considered through product replacement and installation.

All FireAngel One smoke and heat alarms use the MP7 Universal Baseplate. Where an existing MP7 baseplate is correctly installed and remains in good condition, it can be retained when replacing existing modules (including; ST-622, FA6620-R and the FP2620W2-R) with a FireAngel One alarm.

This can reduce the need for additional installation materials and avoid unnecessary replacement of the baseplate. The shared design can also make replacement quicker and reduce disruption during installation.

Protecting people while considering the planet

Home safety will always be the primary purpose of an alarm, but product design can also consider the resources and materials used throughout its lifecycle.

From using recycled plastics in eligible products and recyclable packaging to 10-year sealed batteries and a shared baseplate, FireAngel One incorporates a number of features designed to reduce waste and support longer product lifecycles.

Connected features can also provide greater visibility of your alarms, including diagnostics that can help identify issues and support troubleshooting. This can make it easier to understand when an alarm needs attention, rather than replacing a product unnecessarily.

FireAngel is committed to finding new and more sustainable ways to protect people’s lives, without compromising the safety and performance of its products.

When an alarm reaches the end of its working life, it should be disposed of responsibly through the appropriate WEEE recycling facilities, rather than placed in general household waste. Packaging can be recycled through your usual household recycling where facilities allow. We recommend keeping the product manual and proof of purchase safe for as long as you have the alarm, so you have the information you need throughout its working life and if you need to make a warranty claim.
