Your complete guide to Summer fire safety

23 July 2026

Discover essential summer fire safety tips, home protection advice and carbon monoxide guidance for holidays, BBQs, caravans and campervans.

Summer is a time for making memories – from family BBQs and garden parties to camping trips, caravan holidays and long-awaited summer holidays abroad. While it’s a season filled with fun and relaxation, it’s also a time when many people become a little more relaxed about home and fire safety. Whether you’re leaving your home empty for a weekend getaway or cooking outdoors more often, taking a few simple precautions can help keep you, your family and your property protected.

Keep your home protected while you’re away

One of the biggest concerns during the summer holiday season is leaving your home unattended. Whether you’re away for a long weekend or a two-week holiday, it’s important to know your home is still protected.

FireAngel’s Pro Connected Range gives homeowners greater peace of mind by knowing that if one alarm alerts, they all do. With the Pro Connected gateway, if a compatible alarm is triggered while you’re away, you’ll receive an alert allowing you to act quicker.

BBQs, outdoor cooking and carbon monoxide risks

Summer activities often mean more outdoor cooking. Whether you’re using a charcoal BBQ, gas barbecue or portable camping stove, it’s important to remember that these appliances can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO).

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and poisonous gas that can be fatal if inhaled. BBQs and camping stoves should never be used inside homes, tents, caravans, awnings or enclosed spaces, even after they’ve stopped cooking, as they can continue producing CO.

The risk isn’t limited to outdoor entertaining either. Gas appliances used in campervans, caravans and holiday accommodation can also present a carbon monoxide hazard if they aren’t properly maintained or ventilated.

For reliable protection, FireAngel recommends installing a carbon monoxide alarm wherever fuel-burning appliances are present.

  • FA6813 Carbon Monoxide Alarm – featuring replaceable batteries, making it ideal for caravans, campervans and holiday homes.
  • FA3322 Digital Display Carbon Monoxide Alarm – includes a digital display, temperature & humidity sensor, and a shipping disable tag. This deactivates the battery during transport or storage, helping preserve battery life, making it particularly convenient for international travellers carrying the alarm by air.

Many countries have less stringent carbon monoxide safety requirements than the UK, so taking your own trusted CO alarm can provide valuable extra reassurance while travelling.

Summer fire safety matters more than ever

Hotter, drier weather also increases the risk of outdoor fires. Between January and July 2026, England and Wales experienced 342 wildfires linked to rising spring and summer temperatures. In a typical year, Fire and Rescue Services attend around 30,000 wildfires and grass fires, highlighting how quickly small incidents can escalate during warmer months.

Simple safety tips can help reduce the risk:

  • Never leave BBQs unattended.
  • Allow charcoal to cool completely before disposal.
  • Keep outdoor cooking equipment away from fences, sheds and dry grass.
  • Dispose of cigarettes responsibly.
  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before travelling.
  • Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property while you’re away.
